Ipod To Home Stereo

I bought a Belkin Stereo Link Cable for ipod to listen to my ipod through my home stereo system. I tried it in three different component inputs of my Denon AV Surround Receiver, each time I got sound from the right speakers only. I'm not using a dock, just plugging the cable into my headphones jack, guy at apple store said this would work.

Do I need a dock for this? Why?
