The Plantronics C65 DECT wireless headset brings hands free flexibility to a fixed line phone just like a Bluetooth headset does for a mobile.

Fixed line telephone users often need the hands free flexibility that mobile users have often taken for granted with Bluetooth earpieces. They can get that using wired headsets, but this DECT headset gives genuine wireless freedom with DECT quality sound and a range of about 50-100m from the base station.

Setting Up the Plantronics C65 headset.

The DECT wireless headset needs to be used with a GAP standards compatible DECT base station. The base station PIN has to be set to 0000 - there are no keys on the headset to set any other PIN. The Plantronics C65 is registered with the base just like another handset would be, and from then on incoming calls can be picked up by simply pressing the connect button at the side to the headset.

A charging stand is provided which has a LED for power and one showing when the battery is charging. The Plantronics C65 is a bit heavier than the typical mobile phone Bluetooth earpiece, and a bit larger than most too, but this makes it ergonomically a little better in that the microphone is closer to the user's mouth.

Making Calls With the Plantronics C65 DECT Headset

Answering a call is easy enough, simply press the answer button on the side and the call is connected. However, without a keyboard the C65 cannot make calls on its own, so Plantronics recommend that the main DECT phone is used to dial the number and then transfer the call to the C65.

Transferring the call from one DECT handset to another can be a bit involved though it certainly does work. The operator needs to know the number of the destination (the Plantronics C65) and what code is used to transfer calls.

An easy alternative way to make calls with the Plantronics C65 is to dial the number with another phone, rather than the DECT base station. Press the answer/connect button on the C65 once the number is dialled and the headset is connected to the dialled call, which is usually ringing, and the extension phone can be put back on the hook.

The Plantronics C65 DECT headset works very well. Range is good, equivalent to any other DECT handset. A discreet bi-bip is signalled in the earpiece if the operator wanders out of range, giving plenty of warning before the signal is lost.

The controls are a bit fiddly as they need to be small. Mute and volume control is a combined rocker and press switch on the top of the earpiece and a button on the side connects the call. Sound quality is much better than a Bluetooth earpiece for a mobile - it has the clarity of a landline and the DECT cordless standard preserves that with no apparent loss of quality at all.
