One of the best things about the iPod Touch and iPhone is the sheer number of applications available for them. These are the ten best free ones on offer.

The list of Applications available for download to an iPhone or iPod Touch is massive, so finding one that does a good job can be difficult.

Social Networking Applications for iTouch and iPhone

Facebook: The ever-popular social networking site made the leap to the iTouch and iPhone in spectacular style. Offering all the usual features, but in a much lighter and easier to read browser style optimised for the iTouch and iPhone, Facebook allows the user to read all the latest news, update their status and chat online with the minimum of fuss- a brilliant App and one worth downloading immediately.

IM+ Lite: This App is a killer for anybody who likes to be on an instant messenger at all hours of the day. Offering the ability to connect to just about any instant messenger programme, from MSN to AIM, IM+ Lite is a fantastic little tool for keeping in touch, as long as the user can get along with the iPhone and iTouch’s keyboard.

Game Applications for iTouch and iPhone

iShoot Lite: Don’t let the ‘Lite’ put off a download of this fun little application. IShoot Lite is the smaller version of a full-price game also available for download, and pits the player in a tank battle against up to three human or computer-controlled opponents. With a gameplay dynamic similar to Worms, players have to buy different weapons and then use the touch screen to aim and fire until all other enemies are eliminated- a great timewaster on a long journey.

Labyrinth Lite: More than a fond memory, the popular board game Labyrinth makes a brilliant conversion to the iTouch or iPhone, making full use of the device’s motion sensing body case. Basically played like the older game, Labyrinth Lite pits the player against a series of tricky mazes, through which a metal ball bearing must then be guided to the finish. Simple but effective, this game can amuse for hours, even in its ‘Lite’ form, which offers just 10 maps of increasing difficulty.

Touch Hockey: This is a brilliant App to use when friends are admiring the device. Basically it’s the iTouch or iPhone’s version of Air Hockey- the electronic game beloved of funfair-goers worldwide. Players can go against the device or enlist another human player to face off over the board, which is well presented and features all the usual sound effects associated with Air Hockey, as well as a killer instant replay which shows off the winning move in slow motion- a brilliant little game and not to be missed.

Free Drum Pad: Exactly what it promises, this App offers prospective drummers a chance to work on a rhythm while on the move, and comes in acoustic and electric formats. Although the controls can be a little tricky at first, pretty soon the user should be able to beat out a mean rhythm with ease- a great way to relax on a long bus journey.

Utility Applications for iTouch and iPhone

Wi-Finder: One of the more useful Apps, Wi-Finder basically scans for any Wi-Fi signal within range of the iTouch or iPhone, displays the access options clearly and can be set to constantly scan, allowing the user to find and log into any open Wi-Fi signal with ease. As the iTouch doesn’t have an easy-access Wi-Fi scanner, this one is worth a download, if only to make the user’s surfing life easier.

Backgrounds: This App offers a massive library of pictures, screensavers and general frivolity to add a bit of colour to your iTouch or iPhone. Putting one of the funny images on as a background is a sure-fire way to cheer up between business appointments. If putting personal pictures as a screensaver wouldn’t feel right, then this is worth downloading.

BBCReader: The BBC have made a heroic effort to move into internet news with this brilliant little App, which allows the user to scroll through all the latest national and international news with the option to set a certain page as the homepage for each log in- so an American user could set US news as the homepage. The news is updated automatically every time the iPhone or iTouch connects to a Wi-Fi signal, and provides a huge amount of news to troll through without the problems associated with viewing wide pages in Safari.

Apple Remote: A nice little gift from the minds behind the iTouch and iPhone, the Apple Remote allows the user to control the playback of their Apple TV or computer’s iTunes library remotely. This can come in very useful when elsewhere in the home or garden and can be used to control any computer connected to the same wireless network.

There are literally hundreds of free Apps on the market, but these ten offer the user a good cross section of the best on offer for free.
